Hilton Garden Inn - Cedar Falls, IA - Alex & Alyssa

No one would have guessed the hurdles Alex & Alyssa had to overcome to make this wedding day happen. If you had been there, you would have assumed everything unfolded exactly as planned. The day was relaxed, joyful, and full of the kind of genuine moments that make weddings so memorable.

Their celebration took place at the Hilton Garden Inn in Cedar Falls, one of my favorite local wedding venues to photograph. From the welcoming staff to the elegant ballroom and consistently delicious food, they always do an incredible job of making couples and their guests feel taken care of. Every wedding I've photographed there has been well organized, and this one was no exception. It allowed everyone—including the bride and groom—to simply enjoy the day instead of worrying about the details.

One part of this story that many guests probably never knew is that I wasn't originally scheduled to photograph Alex & Alyssa's wedding. Their photographer was unfortunately involved in an accident just a few weeks before the wedding, and I was asked to step in and document their day.

It's a reminder of something couples don't often think about while planning a wedding: life happens. As photographers, we never expect emergencies, but they can occur. One of the most important things to look for when hiring a wedding photographer is a contract that includes a contingency plan for unexpected circumstances. While no photographer can promise that every emergency can be solved, having a network of trusted professionals and a clear backup plan helps protect your investment and gives you one less thing to worry about if the unexpected happens.

Although our time together began under unusual circumstances, it didn't take long to feel like I'd known Alex & Alyssa much longer. They, along with their families and friends, were incredibly welcoming from the moment I arrived. Throughout the day there were plenty of smiles, laughter, heartfelt moments, and the quiet in-between interactions that often become some of my favorite photographs.

I'm grateful I had the opportunity to step in, meet such wonderful people, and preserve these memories for them. Alex & Alyssa's wedding is proof that even when the road leading to a wedding day doesn't go exactly as planned, the celebration itself can still be everything a couple hoped it would be.
